Everything You Need To Know About Orthodontics

What is an Orthodontist, and How are They Different from Dentists?

A dentist’s main focus is maintaining the health of the teeth and gums through restorative and preventative dentistry. Most people visit their dentist for their periodic cleaning and check up twice per year. It may be necessary to see your dentist more often if you find that you are susceptible to cavities, or if you struggle with gum disease.

An orthodontist focuses solely on the alignment of your teeth and  your jaw. Which in turn, results in a beautiful smile.

Your first orthodontic appointment will consist of x-rays and a thorough consultation. Your orthodontist will work with you to determine what kind of orthodontic treatment you would benefit from.

Your proposed treatment plan will depend on your case and what you wish to achieve with treatment. Orthodontic treatment goes far beyond achieving a “pretty” smile; it ensures that you you can properly  chew, and make sure there your teeth are easier to clean and keep healthy,

What Kind Of Treatment Does An Orthodontist Offer?

In most cases, an orthodontist will present you with two different options, depending on what they find to be the right fit for your smile. The two most common orthodontic treatments are invisalign and traditional braces.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that discreetly straightens your teeth. The system makes use of clear aligner trays, which focus on aligning a certain section of teeth. Every two weeks, you will receive a new set that focuses on a different section, and this will continue until your treatment is complete.

With Invisalign, patients are asked to wear their trays for a minimum of 22 hours each day. The trays can be removed to eat, and they can also be removed to brush and floss.

What Are Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces have wires that connect to brackets that are attached to the surface of the teeth. Over time, the wires are gradually tightened, applying gradual pressure to the teeth to help guide them into the ideal position.

Traditional braces are not as aesthetically pleasing, but they are typically ideal for patients with more extensive treatment plans.

While Invisalign is typically favored, it may not be an option for everyone. Some orthodontists will recommend traditional braces if spacing is too far apart, or if there is extreme crowding in the mouth. A thorough examination and consultation with your orthodontist will help you determine which treatment option is best for you.
